City of Ocoee announces death of former commissioner

The city of Ocoee announced the death of former commissioner John Grogran, who died at the age of 64. 

Originally from Boston, Grogan moved to the city of Ocoee in 1998, and began volunteering for as many city boards as he was allowed to in 2002. What he thought would be simple volunteering work for the city he had moved to turned into a passion and devotion.

In 2013, Gary Hood, a former Ocoee commissioner, asked Grogan to run for commissioner, so he did. 

"A dedicated public servant and cherished member of our community, Mr. Grogan served six years on the Ocoee City Commission from 2013 (to) 2019, leaving a lasting impact on our city and its future," Ocoee officials said. 

Grogan served in the city's commission for nine years, and at some point, he also served as interim mayor and Mayor, following the retirement of Scott Vandergrift. 

He served as the city's mayor until Rusty Johnson took office in 2015. 

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to Commissioner Grogan’s wife, Michelle; his children, Harrison, Amanda, and Isabella; his granddaughters, Lailani and Mia; and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him," city officials said. "His distinguished service and unwavering support for the citizens of Ocoee will always be remembered."
