The daddies and daughters at Oakland Avenue Charter School were invited to a special dance Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Jessie Brock Community Center, in Winter Garden. The theme was Cowboys and Angels, and there were plenty of both enjoying the dance floor and the cowboy chow. A photographer captured the dad-daughter duos on hay bales, and a giant "wanted" poster offered a reward for the capture of any varmints who dared show their faces.
More than 250 girls and their fathers enjoyed the evening.
The special moment of the event came when retired Army Sgt. Jeff Kelly shared the dance floor with his daughters, Jade and Lindsey. Kelly served three tours of duty in Iraq and, in 2008, sustained serious leg injuries in a mortar attack. He attended last year's dance in a wheelchair, but this year, after undergoing a leg amputation seven months ago, he walked the girls onto the floor with the help of a prosthetic leg, which was even fitted with a cowboy boot.
