While a boy and girl were walking home from Citrus Elementary School Tuesday, an SUV exiting the Walgreens in the area of Clarke and Silver Star roads hopped a Clarke curb and struck them around 3:50 p.m., while they were standing with their bicycles on the sidewalk, police said.

Lastevie V. Howard is the driver accused in the incident. Witnesses told police that Howard went around cars in the exit lane of the parking lot with too much speed, via the entrance lane. The girl flew several feet into the road.

Reports indicate the boy's injuries were minor, but the girl underwent surgery to relieve brain swelling that night at Winnie Palmer Hospital. She is in the intensive care unit in critical condition.

Grief counselors have talked with members of the Citrus Elementary community today at the school.

Police said they would release 911 calls soon. No charges are filed against Howard yet.
