Local players help power West to victory in Central Florida All-Star Game -- Observer Preps

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS West Orange County was well represented at the 18th annual Central Florida All-Star Football Game.

Wekiva High’s Rich Bedesem served as head coach of the victorious West Team, which used a 21-point second quarter to defeat the East 35-16 on Thursday night at Lake Brantley High School. Wekiva quarterback and West Team MVP Trey McGee threw three touchdown passes to Central Florida All-Star Game MVP MJ Jarrell of Timber Creek.

The West roster also featured a trio of area running backs in Deshawn Massey of Apopka (West Offensive MVP), Jaylon Fair of Wekiva and Jaquane Patterson of Foundation Academy. Ocoee High’s Lyston Barber, Dorian Jones and B.J. Bohler also played pivotal defensive roles.

Dr. Phillips High had several players selected to the initial West roster as well, but the Panthers’ 2016 varsity season is ongoing as they play Miami Southridge on Saturday at Camping World Stadium for the Class 8A state championship.

The West took a 7-0 lead after the first quarter when McGee connected with Jarrell (Maryland commit) for a 44-yard touchdown, capping an impressive opening 79-yard drive. East River’s Aldo Barahona added the extra point at the 9:43 mark.

Both teams missed field goals thereafter – the East from 53 yards with three minutes remaining in the opening quarter and the West from 27 on the first play of the second quarter – before the West capitalized on a short field. Cypress Creek’s Tyler Brisgone recovered a fumble at the East 17-yard line and that set up McGee’s 5-yard TD pass to Jarrell with 9:36 left before halftime.

Lake Mary’s Grant Goupil put the East on the scoreboard with a 46-yard field goal at the 6:33 mark of the second quarter, but the West countered with Massey’s 18-yard touchdown run on fourth down and a 36-yard interception return for a score by West Defensive MVP Benny McCray of East Ridge for a 28-3 halftime advantage.

Space Coast’s Jason Browning (East Offensive MVP) and DeLand’s Stephon Bruten caught second-half touchdown passes for the East, while Jarrell’s third TD catch came from 9 yards on a quick screen with 4:07 to go in the third quarter.

Additional award winners included Bobby Bruce (East Defensive MVP) and Dez Arthur (East Team MVP). The Jeff Lindstrom Award recipients were Mainland’s Charles Fordham (East) and Orangewood Christian’s Jono Horvath (West).
