The Dr. Phillips girls soccer team had its season come to a close Jan. 18 with a 2-0 loss to the Apopka Blue Darters in the semifinals of the Class 5A, District 4 Tournament.

The season-ending loss means that standout senior forward Aalyiah Bates ended the 2016-17 campaign with 33 goals scored, tying a program record.

Shae Vevera had set the scoring record in 2015.

Bates, who came over to the Panthers from Olympia, made an immediate impact on her new team. In November, she was recognized with the Windermere Observer's Sports Spotlight for the Nov. 17 edition after she scored nine goals in three games.

Dr. Philips finished the season 10-6-2 under first-year head coach Donny George with six freshmen starting.
