OCOEE POOL OPENING

11:15 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Ocoee Parks and Recreation Department’s Family Aquatic Facility at the Jim Beech Recreation Center, 1820 A.D. Mims Road. The pool features a safe, zero-depth entry and a maximum depth of four feet. Admission is $1.50 for adults and $1 for children and seniors. RUN FOR THE ROSES

5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at The Pines of Windermere, 3409 Maguire Road, Windermere. Join the West Orange Junior Service League for its biggest fundraiser of the year, the annual Run for the Roses. The evening includes derby-inspired food and drinks, a hat contest, video horse racing, silent auction and a live showing of the Kentucky Derby. FUZZY THERAPY MINIATURE HORSES DERBY DAY

DERBY DE MAYO CHIHUAHUA RUN

INSECT SAFARI

10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Oakland Nature Preserve, 747 Machete Trail, Oakland. Christy LeDuc leads this family-suitable program, teaching attendees about different native insects of Florida. The program starts in the classroom and continues with a guided hike on the preserve so participants can see bugs up close. Take a reusable water bottle and wear closed-toe shoes. 64TH ANNUAL BAHIA SHRINE CIRCUS

10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6 at Silver Spurs Arena/Osceola Heritage Park, 1875 Silver Spur Lane, Kissimmee. Enjoy six shows of a traditional American three-ring circus by the Royal Hanneford Circus. Proceeds benefit the operations of Bahia Shrine Center in Orlando. Community Editor Amy Quesinberry was born at the old West Orange Memorial Hospital and raised in Winter Garden. Aside from earning her journalism degree from the University of Georgia, she hasn’t strayed too far from her hometown and her three-mile bubble.
