The Oakland Police Department has rolled out a variable message board to let residents know of a change in the speed limit along Oakland Avenue.

At the request of the town of Oakland, Orange County approved lowering the speed limit from 45 to 35 between West Colonial Drive and the city limits of Winter Garden.

A traffic trailer will be put in place later this week that shows drivers how fast they are traveling.

“Displaying a driver’s speed has been shown to be an effective tool,” Police Chief John Peek said. “We hope that bringing awareness will make our roads safer for residents and visitors.”

The traffic trailer also is equipped with a high-tech license plate reader, which can help identify vehicles in Amber or Silver alerts, as well as stolen cars. It was paid for through law-enforcement impact fees.
