In the future, developers looking to build multifamily residences in Winter Garden must adhere to further local building standards.

This is due to Winter Garden commissioners approving an ordinance Thursday, Feb. 27, to amend city code to create local amendments to the Florida building code.

Ordinance 20-15 creates two new code sections. One would require certain exterior and interior load-bearing walls in certain structures be made from masonry block, metal or concrete; the other requires vertical accessibility, or elevators, in certain multifamily structures that have two or more floors.

These restrictions exclude developers building affordable housing or complexes with less than 50 units.

Check back for an in-depth story of the Feb. 27 commission meeting, including other items city leaders discussed, online and in print on Thursday, March 5.
