Florida will allow hair salons, barber shops and nail salons to reopen Monday, May 11, with enhanced safety protocols.

J Henry, owner of J Henry's Barber Shop in downtown Orlando, made the announcement via a video Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on his social media channels Friday, May 8.

The announcement comes nearly a week after Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings penned a letter to DeSantis asking him to consider reopening personal services like hair salons and nail salons. DeSantis and Demings met Saturday, May 2, with Orlando-area salon owners to discuss their concerns and wishes to reopen. Demings told DeSantis he had "no concern" as to whether salon owners could reopen safely.

Hair salons, barber shops and nail salons in counties currently in phase one of reopening will be allowed to reopen with their enhanced safety protocols. This may include masks, gloves and disposable capes.

"We are ready to get right to work and make some money, but getting back to work we want to continue to be safe and wear our gloves, wear masks, book by appointment and continue to keep the community safe," Henry said in the video. "I know everybody's happy to come out and support the barber shop, and we want to continue to keep one thing in mind: Safety is always first."
