Despite beating the Apopka Blue Darters twice earlier this season and being the clear favorite in Class 3A, District 4, the West Orange Warriors were upset in their third showdown against their Orange County neighbors, 3-1, at home in the district championship match.
After rallying back in commanding fashion, 25-18, to tie the match at one set apiece in the best-of-five title bout, West Orange dropped a thriller of a third set, 31-29.
Apopka continued its momentum from the extended third set and captured the fourth set, the match win and a surprising district title by handing the Warriors just their fourth loss on the season — snapping West Orange’s 12-game winning streak.
Regardless of the loss, the Warriors still clinched a spot in the 3A Regional Playoffs and play their regional quarterfinal match on the road against Lake Brantley High at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6.
