Dr. Phillips boys water polo head coach earns Coach of the Year

Leonardo Leon Ramirez was named the 2026 Boys Water Polo Coach of the year in the Metro West Conference.

Dr. Phillips High boys water polo head coach Leonardo Leon Ramirez was named the 2026 Boys Water Polo Coach of the year in the Metro West Conference.

Leon Ramirez has coached the team since 2006 and celebrated his 500th victory Sept. 1, 2021. He graduated from DP in 1997, where he swam and was a member of the water polo team. He won states with the men's swim team in 1995 and held the school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.22. 

The boys water polo team finished the past season 18-8 under his guidance and first in Class 1A, District 5 with a 4-0 record. DP's boys team also had four athletes named to the Metro West Conference 2026 first team: Tate Miller, Emanuel Pardo, Alejandro Delgado and Giacomo Graff. The girls team's Natalya Speller and Dora Chen were also named to the first team.
