Winter Garden residents will have restrictions on the fertilizer they can use from Monday, June 1, through Wednesday, Sept. 30.

According to the Orange County Fertilizer Management Ordinance, which is applicable to Winter Garden, only fertilizers with zero nitrogen and zero phosphorus are permitted to be applied to all lawns, turf and landscape plants.

"This is due to the abundance of rain the area gets during these summer months, which flushes the pollutants from lawns into our local waterbodies," according to a news release from the city of Winter Garden.

The ordinance is effect every summer to help protect springs, lakes and rivers.

From Thursday, Oct. 1, through Monday, May 31, 2027, fertilizers containing nitrogen are allowed, but the fertilizers must contain at least 65% slow-release nitrogen.
