In the final minutes of the game, Foundation Academy neared the end zone. The team trailed Victory Christian 12-7.

Just one touchdown. That’s all it would take to win the game — and become regional champions for the first time in Foundation history.

Those hopes were shattered when Victory picked the ball, gaining possession.

It was a heartbreaking turn of events, considering Foundation led the game until fourth quarter. But when the night was over, Victory gained a 12-7 win over Foundation.

“We’re young, and we made mistakes,” said Coach Brad Lord. “That’s it.”

The defense played a strong game, keeping Victory off the board until the third quarter. Foundation had several interceptions and recovered fumbles, most notably an interception of Lester Axson. Axson ran the ball for a touchdown, but the play was called back for a penalty — which plagued Foundation throughout the night.

“I think I played good,” Axson said. “I played for my brothers and my team. I’m going to miss this season.”

The only touchdown of the night was a quarterback sneak by Evan Thompson.

“Offensively, we only scored seven points,” Lord said. “Can’t win games scoring seven points.”

Foundation and Victory met earlier this season, when Foundation beat Victory 34-28 in overtime. Victory won the 2A state championship last season.

“I knew it was going to be a war when we played again,” Lord said. “We’re a little upset we didn’t go further than we did but we had a great season.”

Foundation graduates only four seniors, so the team hopes to return strong next season.
