WINTER GARDEN — The Winter Garden City Commission formally approved the 2015-2016 budget by passing the second reading of ordinances to set the millage rate, approve projected revenues, and establish expenditures.

The budget leaves the millage rate at 4.250 for the sixth consecutive year, Finance Director Laura Zielonka said.

City staff projects revenues of $30,844,011 next fiscal year, with about $10 million coming from ad valorem taxes and $20 million from other sources including state revenue share and fees. Winter Garden spends 52%  of its budget on public safety, including police and fire departments.

The commission also approved spending Community Redevelopment Agency funds of just under $1 million next year. Commissioner Bobby Olszewski asked if that money will help revitalize east Winter Garden.

“$200,000 is set aside for rejuvenation in that community,” City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said .

All budget resolutions passed unanimously.

Commissioner Kent Makin asked for clarification about the cancellation of the downtown car show. He said several citizens discussed this with him. They were under the impression it was the city’s decision. Mayor John Rees said it was not a city decision. The show’s sponsor withdrew support three months ago.

City staff asked the car show’s organizers to present an alternative plan to keep it going, but as of last night had not received any plan.

Bollhoefer scheduled a meeting with the organizers next week to see if there could be some changes made that could satisfy all concerned parties. Rees said he hoped a compromise could be achieved.
