DR. PHILLIPS Junior guard Tiffany Tolbert scored 29 points — 19 of which came in the second half — to lead the Dr. Phillips girls basketball team past the rival Olympia Titans Tuesday night.
The victory marked the sixth consecutive win for the Panthers, who are now 9-12 on the year and rolling as the district tournament approaches.
"I wanted to step it up and made it a tough schedule this year, so early in the season we took some brutal losses to some great quality teams," head coach Anthony Jones said. "So, when we came back in January, (the hope was) we would have learned a lot to compete with teams in the Metro and other local teams."
Dr. Phillips led by just one point at the half, 23-22, before scoring an impressive 37 points in the second half. The decided shift in the second half was anchored by an aggressive approach by Tolbert.
"This is probably one of Tiffany's best games I've seen all year," Jones said. "She has the skill, she has the capability and we've been pushing her to be a little more aggressive offensively — and that light switch finally came on three or four games ago."
Freshman forward Johnnia Steele secured 12 rebounds for the Panthers, also, while Rebeca Huggins led the Titans with 10 points.
