HORIZON WEST  After examination of multiple possible rezones for Horizon West elementary schools, the Orange County School Board finalized a rezoning map that will affect Independence and Sunset Park elementary schools.

During its Jan. 26 meeting, board members approved a map that would mean a third elementary school in as many years for almost all current Independence Elementary students who live east of Lake Hancock.

The area for relief elementary school 117-E-SW-4 -- which will be at the site within Silverlake Park Drive, Vermillion Avenue and Iron Mountain and Powder Ridge trails near Lake Reams -- covers the entirety of Reams and Ficquette roads, as well as part of Winter Garden-Vineland Road from near Lakeside Village Lane to the area of Walt Disney World's northeast corner.

Projections for student numbers in the 2016-17 school year are 786 for Independence Elementary, 841 for Sunset Park Elementary and 842 for the relief school.
