19-year-old Winter Garden resident is killed in car crash

WINTER GARDEN A 19-year-old man was killed in a car crash at about 1:30 a.m. on Monday, April 10, at the intersection of West Colonial Drive and Oakland Avenue.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, Carlos Sanchez Santiago, a Winter Garden resident, was driving a 1998 Nissan when he was hit by 23-year-old Groveland resident Darius Wilvenson. Wilvenson, who was fleeing Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies, crashed into Santiago as he turned onto Oakland Avenue from eastbound West Colonial Drive, FHP officials said.

Santiago was pronounced dead at the scene. Wilvenson was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Wilvenson was driving on a suspended license and had active warrants for traffic violations.
