APOPKA The West Orange boys basketball team earned its first win of the season Tuesday night, and it did so on the road against a team that is not only one of its chief district rivals, but also against a state finalist from the 2016-17 season.
Spurred by a second quarter where they outscored the Mustangs 25-12, the Warriors (1-2) held on a for a 71-65 victory.
After a pair of losses to quality opponents in Dr. Phillips and Leesburg last week to open the season, coach Eric Jones was relieved to see his squad come out with what will hopefully be the first victory of many.
“There’s not a whole lot (we did) different — I just think we were able to finish,” Jones said afterward.
K.J. Simon led the Warriors with 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Darrell Harding and Tyler Yorke also finished in double figures, with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Wekiva (1-2) was led by Jeremy Johnson’s 21 points and nine rebounds. Tyrone Perry added 17 points and four steals.
