Alyson Hupp is in her first year as a board member for Windermere Elementary School’s Parent-Teacher Organization serving as the school improvements director.
She oversees school improvements by coordinating and supervising efforts to provide and maintain capital improvements at the school.
“I'm in my first year as a board member, and I truly appreciate being involved with such a passionate and supportive community,” Hupp said. “I enjoy rolling up my sleeves and working together to find meaningful ways to make a positive impact on our WES community.”
The PTO’s plans for this year include new soccer fields, outdoor enrichment areas, new inclusive playground equipment, more functional parent seating spaces, a renovated teacher lounge and more.
At the beginning of last summer, Hupp walked the school property, identifying more than 40 tasks and projects needing to be completed. One of the most exciting projects to her was helping to bring Principal Janet Bittick’s vision for a new student lounge to life. Hupp painted, assembled and organized the space that now is known as the WES Rec Room — Where Excellence Shines.
“It’s a vibrant room filled with school spirit, fun games, creative opportunities and comfort to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students,” she said.
Why did you join Windermere Elementary School’s PTO?
I joined the PTO because I wanted to give back to the school that gives so much to our children every day. I’ve always believed that the students’ and teachers’ environment can shape their experiences, so I love finding ways to make those spaces more meaningful and inspiring. My goal is to help make Windermere Elementary feel even more special for everyone who walks through the doors. We have several school improvement initiatives currently underway with many more planned for this year.
What do you love most about your school?
Without a doubt, it’s the people. We have the most incredible teachers, staff, students and community, all from different walks of life. There’s a genuine sense of love and connection that makes Windermere Elementary feel like family.
Even right now, unfortunately a close member of our school community is facing a personal challenge. It’s deeply moving to see how everyone comes together with such compassion and strength. Moments like these show the heart of our community with people showing up for one another in the most beautiful ways, reminding us that kindness and empathy are at the core of who we are as a school.
What is the most rewarding part of your job for the PTO?
The most rewarding part is seeing the joy and pride on students’ and teachers’ faces when they experience something new we’ve created together like the student rec room, the refreshed entryway or the updated outdoor spaces. To make sure each project meets the needs of our students and staff, we work closely with Principal (Janet) Bittick and Vice Principal (Robin) Brooks who have such a deep understanding of what our students and staff need. Watching the students’ excitement reminds me why these projects matter so much. It’s not just about improving the look of the school; it’s about creating spaces that make people feel happy, valued and proud to be part of Windermere Elementary.
Who influences you?
I have had wonderful and amazing people in my life that have helped shape and influence who I am today. From my upbringing to the great people I am surrounded by today including my husband, my parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, community members, and so many that I have met at WES. I believe in surrounding myself with positive people, and in turn, I hope to be a positive influence on others.
Who was your favorite teacher when you were in school? Why?
One thousand percent, my elementary school teacher Ms. Josie Joseph! She made learning exciting and always believed in me. That encouragement has stayed with me and inspires the way I try to support others today.
I also grew up surrounded by dedicated educators. My parents worked in schools, my dad as a principal and my mom as a speech pathologist, both in Columbus, Ohio where I was raised. My cousin Tina is also a beloved teacher of 40 years, having taught at OCPS for 10 years before eventually retiring. Seeing their dedication instilled a deep respect and admiration for everyone who helps a school run smoothly. From our amazing custodial team and tech support to our teachers and administrators, every single person plays a vital role in creating the kind of environment where students can thrive.
What is your favorite children’s book and why?
My favorite children’s book was “The New Kid on the Block” poems by Jack Prelutsky. I especially enjoyed a poem titled “Homework! Oh, Homework!” Ironically, it’s a silly poem about not liking homework. Although I was a good student, I found this poem hilarious and finally had the opportunity to share the book with our kids a few years ago.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m passionate about crafting and taking on new projects, especially those that allow me to express my creativity and create something meaningful. Lately, my creative efforts are often focused on school-related activities, but I also like to renovate, fix or build. In addition, I love seeking out new adventures with my husband and our four children whether that's exploring nature, trying new activities or simply enjoying time together.
If you could dine with any famous person, past or present, who would it be and why?
If I could dine with anyone, it would be Princess Diana. She led with such grace and compassion. From an early age, I was deeply interested in her ability to ensure those around her felt acknowledged and valued. And now as a mom myself, I have an even deeper respect for the inspirational mother she was.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I would love the ability to be in multiple places at once. There are so many projects, people and moments that matter. From helping at school to spending quality time with my family, this superpower would let me be fully present everywhere.
If you could only listen to three bands or artists, who would they be and why?
Journey has always been my favorite band. Their music is timeless and uplifting. Every song feels like a reminder to keep believing and enjoy the journey, both literally and figuratively. The Beach Boys’ music just makes you smile! Every song feels like summer, full of energy and happiness. And my kids got me hooked on Imagine Dragons! Their music has so much energy and heart, and it’s become one of those bands we all sing along to in the car.
What was your go-to lunch and favorite snack as an elementary student?
My go-to lunch was a salami, roast beef and provolone sandwich, something my Italian grandparents would make from a little Italian market called Rulli Bros. And for a sweet treat, I was all about Gushers or Fruit by the Foot. Those little snacks always made lunchtime extra fun!
What is your favorite holiday and why?
My favorite holiday is Christmas! I love the magic in the air, the way it brings family and friends together, and especially the joy of giving to others. Celebrating with my four kids and husband makes it even more special, from decorating the tree to enjoying little traditions and creating new memories each year. It’s a time that reminds me how important kindness, gratitude and connection truly are.
I am especially looking forward to this holiday season. Windermere Elementary and the PTO are gearing up for its annual donation drives including the Guardian Angel toy drive, Thanksgiving food drive and Holiday pajama drive.
Who was your best friend when you were in school and why? Are you still in touch?
My best friend, and my hero, is Sara Smouther. We’ve been best friends since middle school, and her friendship has shaped so much of who I am today. Sara has been battling Huntington’s Disease for nearly 15 years and is now in the final stages of this heartbreaking illness. I travel to Indiana every month or two to spend time with her, and even through the most difficult days, she continues to teach me about strength and resiliency.
Sara has helped me find independence through my travels to see her and the courage to smile even when life feels heavy. Despite everything she’s endured, she still greets the world with the most beautiful smile. She’s the strongest person I’ve ever known, and I’m endlessly grateful for the friendship we’ve shared for all these years. I hope that by sharing a small part of her story, I can help bring awareness to Huntington’s Disease and the incredible strength of those who live with it.
What were your extracurricular activities as a student? Did you win any accolades or honors?
I loved playing basketball competitively through high school. In addition, I played volleyball, field hockey, soccer, the piano and sang in choir. Now, I love seeing my children choose their own extracurricular activities and interests, which happen to be some of the same things I used to love, but they are much more musically inclined than I ever was!
How long have you been a member of the PTO?
This is my first year as an official PTO board member, but I’ve been involved with the school and the PTO through other volunteer opportunities for a few years. One of our amazing teachers encouraged me to join the board, and I’m so glad I did.
I’m fortunate to work alongside such a dedicated PTO board! Each member brings their own creativity and energy to the table helping to make everything we do fun and meaningful. Together, we are finding new and exciting ways to engage our community and bring our school spirit to life!
