A Winter Garden woman was taken to the hospital after her husband, who mistook her for an intruder, shot her twice.

According to Winter Garden Police Department reports, officers responded to a shooting at 11:23 p.m. April 25 to a home on the 2300 block of Aurelius Drive in Alexander Ridge.

Earlier in the night, the couple thought they heard an intruder to their residence and cleared it while being armed with a firearm, the report said. Once the residence appeared cleared, they both went to bed for the night.

About 45 minutes later, Allison Simmons went to the bathroom, because she didn't feel well. She used a flashlight on her phone to navigate through the home. When she was done, Allison Simmons opened the door and woke her husband, Nathan Simmons. He thought it was an intruder and shot his wife twice.

The initial investigation supports the information provided by both individuals; however, the investigation is ongoing, the report said.

Allison Simmons was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.
