Reggie Jean is relatively new to shot put. The Foundation Academy eighth-grader only took up the sport this spring, but already he is making a name for himself. Jean won the Greater Orlando Athletic Conference Middle School Championship in the event and qualified for the middle-school state meet May 12 at IMG Academy. Jean has improved from throwing 37 feet to a personal best of 44 feet.

How long have you been doing shot put, and how did you get started?

This is my first time doing it. I went (to track) for the football workouts, and I did the shot put, too. I just enjoy doing it and competing.

What was it like to compete in some of the varsity meets for Foundation Academy?

It was tough, because they use a bigger ball, and it was hard to throw. The people I was throwing against were experienced and a lot older. It motivated me.

What is your routine before you throw at a meet?

I stretch my legs and arms.

What would you consider to be your main sport?

Basketball. I play center for the middle-school team. … I’m good in the post and at rebounding.

What do you like about playing team sports?

I like that I get to play with my friends and compete against other teams.

Who is your favorite basketball player?

I like LeBron James. I like how he can just power through the defense.

Are you excited about moving up to varsity football this fall?

Yeah, but it’s going to be tough because there are a bunch of grown men up there.

What do you like doing in your free time?

I like watching basketball and playing video games. … My favorite video game is “NBA 2K” — I like playing with the (Golden State) Warriors. I can shoot with whoever I want, and there’s a high-percentage chance of them making it.

If you could play a game of basketball at any arena, where would you choose to play?

The Staples Center, the Lakers’ arena.

What’s your favorite class?

I like science — Mrs. (Jessica) Sullivan is my teacher. I like learning about chemicals and stuff.

What do you want to do for a career?

I want to be an engineer.

What’s your go-to meal after practice?

Chipotle — I get a chicken bowl with everything.
