Windermere to vote on no-right-turn signs along Sixth Avenue

Measures to deal with cut-through traffic through the town of Windermere will go up for a vote at today's Town Council meeting.

Windermere Town Council members will conduct a second reading on an ordinance that allows for no-right-turn signs along Sixth Avenue, placed at Ridgewood Drive and Lee Street and only in effect from 4 to 7 p.m.

A traffic study by Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. showed that 76% of the traffic that’s cutting through is from outside of Windermere and that roads like Ridgewood Drive are being adversely affected. Drivers take Ridgewood Drive to try and circumvent the backup of cars along Sixth Avenue leading up to the roundabout at Main Street, Town Manager Robert Smith said.

The Town Council voted down an ordinance in December that would have allowed only eastbound traffic from Lake Street to Lee Street along Ridgewood. Members expressed reservations about making the segment of Ridgewood one way, though, explaining that it would be an inconvenience for residents 24/7 in order to solve a four-hour issue that takes place during rush hour.
