With April recognized as Autism Awareness Month, the Ocoee Police Department has announced a brand-new program intended to assist residents diagnosed with autism.

The Guardian Program launched April 1, and it allows allows family and friends of an Ocoee resident with autism to fill out a short online questionnaire. Family members and friends will be able to provide information they would like Ocoee police officers to know about the autistic resident should police ever have to respond to his or her home.

The police department will ensure that officers will be made aware of this important information should they ever be dispatched to the listed address.

"Having this information will allow officers to tailor their response to provide the best, and safest, service to our autistic residents," Ocoee police said.
