Winter Garden to kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month

The City of Winter Garden is kicking off National Hispanic Heritage Month with a plethora of events and activities to get local residents involved all month long. 

National Hispanic Heritage Month was originally started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week by President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration to cover a 30-day period starting on Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 15.

Since its origination, the month has been dedicated to recognizing the achievements and contributions of those in the Hispanic and Latino community who have changed history and inspired others to do the same. 

Winter Garden will be honoring the rich culture through food, music, dance, art, literature and more.

Starting Sept. 17, there will be free flamenco live music on Fridays at the Plaza by Don Soledad. On Sept. 24, the Mariachi Internacional Tapatio Band, will also be making an appearance on Fridays at the Plaza. 

In terms of art, residents will have the opportunity to create Día de los Muertos art at the Winter Garden Farmers Market or design Hispanic inspired art at SOBO Art Studio. 

The city is also encouraging locals to try some of the many Hispanic and Latin owned restaurants in the area including Ceviche Mix, Hunger Street Tacos, Tres Amigos Grill, and more.
