It was a sinking feeling as the final buzzer sounded for Dr. Phillips as they watched Columbus celebrate its first state championship in its history.
After being down eight with a less than a minute to go, and the game seemingly out of reach, the team had only been down one with a chance to win.
With one second left to play, who else to take that shot but Denzel Aberdeen?
Aberdeen drove down the lane and hoisted up a shot. It bounced off the rim, dashing any hopes of a last-second miracle.
But that does not take away from the fight they showed the entire game. From the start, DP was overwhelmed by Columbus' attack, led by the Boozer brothers, Cameron and Cayden, the sons of former NBA player Carlos Boozer. Even so, they stuck in there and never laid down.
Aberdeen and fellow senior Riley Kugel both led the team with 17 points, with the other member of their Big 3, Ernest Udeh Jr., adding 6.
