Eight Waves is starting a new lunch mentorship program with Dillard Street Elementary School.

The program seeks to "help children from challenging and vulnerable circumstances develop the assets necessary to make healthy life choices, set realistic goals and act with determination," according to Eight Waves.

"Through consistent contact with caring and positive adult mentors, these students can learn how to build vibrant and successful lives for themselves," the program overview states. "The program is designed to help students who live in households with incomes well below the level of poverty, and who are struggling academically, socially and with peer relationships."

Weekly visits with mentees may include activities such as a character building, goal setting, helping with schoolwork or just talking about what is going on in the mentee’s life.

The lunch program will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays at Dillard Street Elementary, 311 N. Dillard St., Winter Garden.

Those who wish to become mentors must complete an ADDitions background screening here.
