Monday, Feb. 3, marked the official start of the boys high school basketball postseason, with the first round of district tournaments kicking off in West Orange and Southwest Orange County and throughout the state.
Various area teams were in action during the quarterfinal round of their respective district championships. In Class 7A, District 5, three area teams — Dr. Phillips High, West Orange High and Olympia High — traveled to Oak Ridge High to fight for their place in the district semifinals. The Panthers, in the opening game of the tournament, were able to easily handle the Warriors, 95-51. DP punched their ticket to the semifinals, having faced No. 1 seed Windermere High Feb. 5, after press time. In the tournament’s second game, the Titans made easy work of Freedom High, 75-54. Olympia faced off against hosts Oak Ridge Feb. 5, after press time.
In 6A, District 7, Lake Buena Vista topped Horizon, 78-55, while The First Academy rolled in their quarterfinal matchup against Circle Christing in 2A, District 4 — winning 94-30 with freshman guard Corey Capps leading the Royals scorers with 16 points. The Legacy Eagles fly by The Geneva School, 84-51, in the 1A, District 7 quarterfinals.
