The Roper Y in Winter Garden hosted a community breakfast on Friday, May 16.
The breakfast was welcomed by board chair Amelia Mackey who asked those listening what came to their mind when they thought of the Y and what missing that the YMCA could step into or strengthen to make and even greater impact.
Pastor Wes Becham then started the morning with a devotion.
President & CEO YMCA of Central Florida Kevin Bolding then asked the crowd and board member Charlie Roper, the son of the Y's namesake Barabra Roper, the one thing missing from the Y. After a second of silence, Bolding proclaimed the answer: its story. He wants Y members to know and understand how the Roper Y came to be and what it means to each family.
Roper then went on to speak about the Roper Y's history. How his mother climbed the ranks as a YMCA member and all the families she touched along the way.
District Vice President YMCA of Central Florida Justin Higa then took the stand, going into detail of the amount of families, members and participants the Roper Y served in 2024.
To close out the breakfast, both community members Cathy O'Brien and Sherry Paramore shared their story with the Y. O'Brien spoke about her son growing up participating in Y sports and camps, while Paramore explained how the Y helped shape her adoptive son's behavior after a few first difficult days.
