Windermere High football coach Riki Smith has been clear about his intentions and goals for each spring football session he’s had since taking over the Wolverines program, development and evaluation.
That approach was once again the guiding principle of spring ball in 2025 across the allotted sessions, with Windermere’s spring jamboree opponents serving as the prime example. On May 22, the Wolverines played a half of football against two Central Florida football powerhouses: The 2024 Class 6A State Runners-up Osceola Kowboys, who went 12-3 last season, and the 5A, District 5 champions Edgewater Eagles, who went 10-2 in 2024.
“Our goal was to play the toughest opponent possible this spring," Smith said. Osceola and Edgewater are perennial powers and I wanted our players to see what top-tier football looks like. They were physical and weren’t afraid and I was proud of that. Playing great teams will magnify your deficiencies. We will use this experience as a stepping stone heading into the summer.”
Despite falling to Osceola High, 7-0, in the first game and 21-0 to Edgewater High in the second, as Smith said, these matchups helped the Windermere coaching staff evaluate its team against high-level opponents and identify the areas of development that need extra attention this offseason and come fall camp.
