The Oakland Police Department shared a sentimental tribute to Chase, a Belgian malinois who served as the department's first K-9.

Former Sgt. Anthony Vitale at the town of Oakland approached the police department in 2016 wanting to start a K-9 program.  He collected enough donations to acquire Chase and the necessary equipment to put him to work.

They began working together in 2017, and Chase retired from the agency in 2021.

In his retirement, K-9 Chase lived out the rest of his days with Vitale.

Five years after his retirement on Friday, July 10, Chase crossed the rainbow bridge.

The OPD said he leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, courage and unwavering dedication.

"We extend our deepest condolences to Chase's handler, family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him," OPD posted. "Thank you for your service, Chase. You served with honor and will forever remain a cherished member of the Oakland Police Department."
