WINTER GARDEN — The West Orange Warriors dropped an exciting, five-set match to the Apopka Blue Darters at home on Tuesday night, 3-2 (26-24, 24-26, 20-25, 25-21, 17-15).

The loss for the Warriors is only their second of the season, dropping them to 11-2 overall — and just their first in district play, where they are 4-1. The win for Apopka evens the season-series at 1-1, as West Orange won the initial match.

A close match from start to finish that was played in front of an enthusiastic crowd, three of the sets went beyond the 25 and 15 point minimums to win.

Despite the loss, West Orange coach Ross Usie is hopeful his girls gained some valuable experience on Tuesday in handling close games.

“Sometimes in those tough situations we get away from the game that we like to play,” Usie said. “In certain situations, when the pressure really gets to them, they become individuals — as many teams do.

“When we do play as a team, that’s when we can really show off and be exciting to watch.”

West Orange had to finish the game without outside hitter Makayla Heidelberg, who left the game during the fourth set with leg cramps.

The Warriors will return to action on Thursday at Evans and then will host rival Olympia on Tuesday.

Apopka is 9-1 overall, 4-1 in district play.
