Fire of unknown origin has destroyed the 57-year-old depot at Oakland. The records of the Atlantic Coast Airline, kept for the company by Mrs. J.E. Clonts, were lost in the flames.

70 years ago

The West Orange Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4305, was organized in Winter Garden. Elected at the first meeting were Ward Britt, commander; Col. Sam Salisbury, senior vice commander; Ronald Cranford, junior vice commander; and Arthur Clarke, quartermaster.

40 years ago

The Church of Christ on Daniels Road in Winter Garden marked a milestone as elders Hugh Grimes and Raleigh Brown set fire to the mortgage and ground was broken on the new church school building.

The Snack Shop at West Orange Memorial Hospital is “manned” daily by auxiliary regulars like Thursday’s Fran Stanford, Phyllis Hickman and Anne McKinnon.

The Dr. Phillips Panthers held on to the Ol’ Orange Crate for the third consecutive year with a 21-0 victory over the West Orange Warriors.

The city of Ocoee held its 12th Annual Founders’ Day Festival on the shores of Starke Lake.

Musical guests included Sawyer Brown, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, Jason Aldean and Craig Morgan.

The National Scholastic Press Association awarded Dr. Phillips High School’s The Paw Street Journal the All-American rating with five Marks of Distinction. This achievement marks the ninth consecutive year the student newspaper has received the highest rating from the critiquing service. Anne Whitt is the advisor.
