Dated July 2, 1940, this postcard from Polly Brenner to Mr. and Mrs. F. Kaiser of Milwaukee is inscribed: “Hello, This is where we are spending a few days and money.” We’re wondering which “country drive” is depicted — could it be old Highway 22, once known as Washington Street (now Story Road), that made its way to Winter Garden from Orlando?

In the 1940s, when Lake Apopka was still known as the “large-mouth bass capital” and famous worldwide, Polly and company might have lodged in the Edgewater Hotel, or perhaps even Trailer City, to relax in town and try their hand at fishing.

The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, which seeks to preserve our heritage and architecture while creating new cultural experiences, is celebrating its third decade with the debut of its new History Research and Education Center.
