Sydney, the beloved dog who is known around West Orange and Clermont for helping children learn to read, has been diagnosed with leukemia.

Sydney is in need of chemotherapy, and her cancer requires several oncology visits. Her current vet bill is $1,900 and will continue to increase.

The non-profit Read to Sydney is seeking to raise $5,000 to help pay her medical expenses.

Sydney is a registered therapy dog who visits elementary schools and nursing homes. The non-profit also aids special-needs children in reading. Read to Sydney has a space at West Oaks Mall, which is open 1-4 p.m. Sundays for kids to come in and read with Sydney.
