WINTER GARDEN Movers and shakers from across West Orange County flocked to Tanner Hall for the latest debate among District 1 Orange County commissioner candidates May 11 in Winter Garden.
Dr. Usha Jain, of Lake Butler, Winter Garden Commissioner Bobby Olszewski and Oakland businesswoman Betsy VanderLey took turns answering questions at the West Orange Chamber of Commerce's debate luncheon. Topics included charter review revisions, economic development, relationships with other elected officials and governments, sustainability and safety.
Here is a snippet from each candidate's closing statement at the debate.
DR. USHA JAIN
"If I'm given a chance to serve the community, it will be coming from the bottom of my heart. ... This for the community. ... I'm going to make it better. ... I will give you 110%."
"I think it's important to have someone in the Orange County Commission that's going to be able to hit the ground running. And I can tell you that we had a lot of controversial things happen in the city of Winter Garden -- a lot of difficult votes -- and I've been in the chair before. ... I'm running on my record, and I think that's important."
"I want to make sure that whatever we do next is something that we're all proud of, that we all live with, and that it helps everyone live in an area that is important to them. I live on a dirt road on three quarters of an acre with big oaks, and I love that. But there are also people that want to live in urban settings, and we need to be able to offer that and people that want to live in rural settlements ... we need to protect that, as well."
