The Olympia girls water polo team held off a rally from Dr. Phillips to secure the Metro Conference: West Championship April 3 with an 11-9 victory at the YMCA Aquatic Center.
Shoshana Scanlon led Olympia with six goals, four steals and two blocks. Julie Marcus chipped in two goals and Imna Maciel had six assists on the night. In goal, Lily Rutledge had 12 saves.
The Titans led 9-4 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Panthers rallied and pulled with two goals before Olympia was able to secure its victory. Caroline Grzeszczak led Dr. Phillips with six goals and a steal and Samantha Horency registered 16 saves and two assists in goal.
A year after the program went undefeated and won its first state title, Olympia coach Stephanie Johnson-Possell says a young and relatively inexperienced roster — the Titans graduated a large and impactful senior class — is beginning to find its footing.
"As a group, we're still evolving who we are and we're still putting the pieces together," Johnson-Possell said. "Our younger girls have a whole lot of grit — they are working their butts off."
