West Orange-area students snag college-sponsored National Merit scholarships

Nine West Orange-area students were among hundreds announced June 5 as winners of college-sponsored National Merit scholarships.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the winners of its college-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners on Wednesday, June 5.

Previously, the NMSC named recipients of this year’s corporate-sponsored awards and $2,500 National Merit scholarships. The NMSC will announce additional recipients of college-sponsored awards in July.

According to NMSC, about 7,600 students will have won National Merit scholarships worth more than $31 million.

The winners announced June 5 are among 3,500 who will receive scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

The following West Orange-area students were announced as winners of NMSC’s college-sponsored scholarships:

  • Brenden J. Berrios (Olympia High) — National Merit University of Florida
  • Talib Hussain Hakim (Dr. Phillips High) — National Merit University of Central Florida
  • Jasmin S. Singh (Olympia High) — National Merit University of Texas Dallas
  • Peter Toma (Dr. Phillips High) — National Merit University of Florida
  • Alexander N. Bani (Olympia High) — National Merit University of Central Florida
  • Blake W. Bradford (Olympia High) — National Merit University of Florida
  • Daniel Isaac Gordon (West Orange High) — National Merit University of Central Florida
  • Catherine J. Kim (West Orange High) — National Merit University of Florida
  • Shannah M. Nice (West Orange High) — National Merit University of South Florida
