1. On Friday, June 14, Ocoee wide receiver Dexter Rentz Jr. announced his commitment to the University of Louisville. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound rising senior wideout received 29 offers from schools like Kentucky, Cincinnati and the University of South Florida before picking the Cardinals. In his junior season at Ocoee, Rentz would haul in 1,200 receiving yards on 60 catches, and scored 14 total touchdowns.

 

2. In a 5-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Sanford River Rats (4-7) on Saturday, June 15, Bryce Jackson (Clarion) led the Winter Garden Squeeze (4-5) at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. On the mound, Matt Nicholas (Texas State) recorded the last five outs to pick up his second save of the season.

 

3. This past week, West Orange High School announced two new hires in the athletic department, as Brian Rizo will take over the girls basketball program and Jay Welsh will lead the baseball program. Rizo comes to West Orange following a stint as an assistant at Winter Springs High, while Welsh is the former head coach of the Winter Garden Squeeze.

 

4. The West Orange Babe Ruth League 8U team had a good go of it during the State Small League tournament from Saturday, June 15, to Sunday, June 16. The team would go 1-2, with a 10-6 win over Ocala Highlands in the second game of the tourney. 

 

5. Ocoee High boys basketball coach John “Sarge” Siers will be holding a basketball camp from Monday, June 24 to Wednesday, June 26. The lessons will go from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Ocoee High School, and are open to both boys and girls ages 8 to 14. For more information email [email protected] or call (828) 719-9525.
