Storage facility coming to Fountains West development

A storage unit facility will be coming to north Ocoee.

City leaders voted unanimously at the May 7 commission meeting to approve the preliminary and final site plan for a Summit Self Storage facility to be built on the Fountains West development. Commissioners also voted unanimously to approve a land-use change for a 5.35-acre parcel located within the roughly 43-acre Fountains West development.

The Fountains West development is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Ocoee Apopka Road and West Road. The 102,600 square-foot, three-story indoor storage unit facility will be built on 11.73 acres on Lot 8 of the Fountains West development. Prior to approving the site plan, commissioners voted unanimously to approve a small-scale comprehensive plan amendment that changes the land-use designation of 5.35-acre parcel located on west side of Lot 8 from low-density residential and light industrial to commercial.

“They’re going to commercial land-use so they can do the self-storage (facility),” assistant city manager Craig Shadrix said. “The Fountains West (development) has been divided up so much. … That (subject property) is one of the remaining outparcels that has not been developed, so the land-use change is specifically for that smaller piece (of land) … that’s right behind the charter school and just to the west of the apartments.

City leaders approved the Fountains West Planned Unit Development in 2006. Since then, the area has seen — and continues to see — significant change and growth as the development built out. In June 2018, the PUD land-use plan was amended to allow for commercial, self-storage and daycare uses on Lot 8 of the development, and also was amended to include phasing the project into two separate phases. Phase 1 of the project includes building the self-storage facility and, possibly, up to 18,000 square feet of retail space or daycare. Phase 2 of the project will provide a future location for the Ocoee Fire Department, according to city documents.

Five proclamations were read at the beginning of the commission meeting: the month of May 2019 has been proclaimed as Building Safety Month, Water Safety Month and Haitian-American Heritage Month; May 5 to 11 was proclaimed as Municipal Clerks Week, May 15 was proclaimed National Peace Officer Memorial Day and the week of May 12 to 18 was proclaimed as National Police Week.

City leaders voted unanimously to allow the city attorney to draft a lease agreement with TNXL Baseball Academy to allow TNXL to move its academy to Bob Sorenson Fields in Ocoee. TNXL also is interested in building a hitting and training facility at Sorenson Fields. Once the city attorney drafts a lease agreement, it will go before the commission for approval.

Commissioners held the first reading of an ordinance that would allow for dog-friendly dining in designated areas at restaurants in the city.
