Local OCPS students and parents called for inclusion during a rally at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Despite a pouring rain that delayed the rally for an hour, members of the West Orange High School marching band and Warriorettes dance team made their way downtown — along with parents and other supporters representing Windermere High and Dr. Phillips High— to voice their desire for Orange County Public Schools to allow for the return of band, cheer, dance and JROTC to the sidelines for the upcoming football season.
The rally was in response to OCPS’ recent decision to limit attendance at football games due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. To cut down on numbers, OCPS is not allowing marching band, cheer teams, dance teams and JROTC from participating this season, and is instead asking schools to record pep rallies and band performances that can be played during games on Friday nights.
