All county-run youth sports leagues are suspended, effective immediately.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings announced the change during his COVID-19 briefing Thursday, Aug. 12.

The suspension includes all games and practices, and affects 1,100 athletes, Demings said.

“Due to the spike in the COVID cases and the fact that our residents ages 11 and under are not eligible for a vaccine, all county-run youth sports leagues — including games and practices — are suspended until further notice,” Demings said. “We know that this has disappointed nearly 1,100 boys and girls who take part in the sports leagues, but we cannot take a chance with their welfare.”

All county parks remain open, but the recreation centers are operating at limited capacity, he said.

“We hope to resume the youth leagues in the future,” Demings said.
