West Orange High girls volleyball went on the road to Windermere High and topped the Wolverines in straight sets to take home the Class 7A, District 5 championship Oct. 17.
"It feels great; it's my first in my time here ... and it's the first for the program in a while," said West Orange coach Matthew Jackson. "The kids worked super hard and they earned this. They're going to embrace this moment and they'll be ready for regionals next week, for sure."
The Warriors (16-4) came out swinging in the first set and set the tone for the evening with a 25-14 win. Windermere (10-11) responded well in the second set, but West Orange was able to hold off the Wolverines' push and win set two 25-22 to extend its lead to 2-0.
In the third set, the Warriors kept the momentum up and finished the job with a 25-16 win. The third straight set win gave West Orange the best-of-five sweep over rivals Windermere.
Leading the way for the Warriors was senior captain Gwenyth Berry. The outside hitter, committed to The Citadel, had 14 kills, seven digs and three blocks on the night.
Berry has been sensational for the Warriors this season after transferring from Horizon High. She finished the regular season with a team-leading 125 kills over 46 sets played to go along with 35 aces, 110 digs, and 181 serves received.
The district title win for West Orange comes with more than hardware for its trophy case; it also comes with a spot in the 7A regional championship tournament, which begins Oct. 23.
