The Orange County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to remove ICE from its Intergovernmental Service Agreement after multiple discussions and research.

The vote took place Tuesday, April 21, replacing the IGSA with a Basic Ordering Agreement, which limits the holding period of ICE detainees from 72 hours to 48 hours.

This comes after Mayor Jerry Demings tried renegotiating the reimbursement rate the county was receiving to keep detainees in jail.

Under a new agreement, Orange County now will be receiving $125 per day per detainee rather than the current $88. District 6 Commissioner Michael Scott said he’s proud of the decision made.

“This was a decision made as a result of copious research, but more importantly, an overwhelming sense of compassion and care for our community,” he said. “There have been far too many families, friendships and communities fractured by this agreement as it was, and I’m proud of (Tuesday’s) results.”
