A fatal blow was dealt to the Winter Park Wildcats Feb. 14 at the hands of Treasure Coast High School in a 52-46 loss in the regional quarterfinal.

The Wildcats (17-11) had elbowed their way into the boys Class 8A regional ladder with a second place finish in the district, falling only to University. But Treasure Coast (19-5) had just come off a district championship with momentum on its side.

The game didn’t get out of hand for most of its duration for the Wildcats, who watched the scoring gap slowly grow over three quarters to as wide as double digits before they began to mount a comeback, but the surge would be too little, too late.

With Treasure Coast shooting 53 percent overall, the Wildcats struggled to keep up.

The Eagles are on a roll heading into a showdown against Gainesville at 7 p.m. Saturday at home, after edging Heritage 69-66 in the boys 6A regional semifinal. With a win, the Eagles (24-4) will face the winner of a matchup between Fort Myers and Miami Norland.

Meanwhile the girls team has been destroying every team it’s faced on a steady march to the state championship game. They smashed Miami Norland at the Lakeland Center Feb. 21 with a 60-45 rout. They have plenty of momentum heading into the championship game: They took down Melbourne 64-16 in the regional quarterfinal, Heritage 77-43 in the semifinal, and Gainesville 78-62 for the regional championship.

They face Chocktawhatchee at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the final in Lakeland.
