The Windermere High girls soccer team stormed their way to the school's first district title in the sport, as the Wolverines utilized a balanced attack in their 3-0 victory over East Ridge in the Class 7A, District 5 championship game Friday, Feb. 7.
A little over a year after falling 2-0 in the district final to Montverde, the Wolverines (14-2-2) came into Friday night's game looking to make some history.
Windermere had just knocked off West Orange the previous Tuesday by the tune of 4-0, and that productive offense got off to a hot start early against East Ridge (11-7-2) when senior midfielder Domenica Facusse put the home side up 1-0 just seven minutes into the game.
The game would see a lengthy delay at the 15 minute mark, when the clock was stopped for an East Ridge player who went down with an injury that was serious enough that Orange County Fire Rescue was called in to assist.
Action would quickly start right back up after the delay, as sophomore defender Miya Skretteberg found pay dirt when she put the ball into the back of the net with just under 24 minutes left in the first half. Despite multiple corners and shots on goals for Windermere, the Wolverines would take their 2-0 lead into the break.
The second half would prove to be a continuation of the first with Windermere dominating possession and recording several shots on goal, while holding the Knights' offense completely in check. The Wolverines would break through for their final goal with a little over 25 minutes left in the the game when freshman forward Janessa Crespo scored her lone goal of the night to seal up the 3-0 win.
Along with winning the district title, the Wolverines have now notched a spot in the FHSAA Class 7A state playoffs.
