West Orange High head coach Mike Granato is only halfway through his first year as the man in charge, but he already has his first signature win — a stressful 15-14 overtime win over Apopka.
After Apopka running back Javen Robinson ran the ball in from 2-yards out to give the Blue Darters a 14-7 lead in overtime, West Orange’s Matthew McDoom ran for a 10-yard touchdown to cut the Apopka lead to 14-13. Then, the call came in: The Warriors would go for two.
After the snap Huff handed the ball of to McDoom, who was chased around the backfield before he tossed the ball to a wide open Huff in the end zone for two points and the game-winning score.
The overtime’s offense was largely unseen throughout a game that mostly consisted of bone-crushing defense.
The Warriors (3-1) broke the 0-0 tie with 2:26 left in the first half when quarterback Tyler Huff hit Jack Main for a 51-yard bomb to give West Orange the 7-0 lead. West Orange had two other chances to score in the game, but a fumble inside the Apopka 5-yard line and a blocked field goal held the Warriors’ offense back.
The Blue Darters (3-2) would pick up their lone regulation touchdown on a Warriors’ error, when a fumbled handoff bounced into the end zone and was recovered by Apopka senior defensive end Devin Barnes to help tie the game up at 7-7 — a score that would hold by the end of regulation. The Warriors held a normally dominant Apopka rushing attack to just 87 yards, while giving up 95-total yards in the game.
With the big win the Warriors have now won three games in-a-row since their season opening loss to Boone, and will take on Lake Brantley (2-3) Friday, Oct. 23.
