Recently Xavier Norfleet’s basketball team, The Heat, won the fourth- and fifth-grade championship at the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA, with Xavier helping to lead the way to victory. During the past season, Xavier also played on three different teams under the coaching of his dad, Samuel Norfleet.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Luke Rosser

Oakland resident Luke Rosser, 14, placed first in the boys 14-year-old division at the USA Triathlon Youth and Junior Nationals July 31 in Ohio. The combined time for Rosser’s 200-meter swim, 10-kilometer bike ride and 2K run was 32 minutes, 8 seconds. Rosser’s achievement is all the more impressive as the local youth competes despite living with Type 1 diabetes.
