Orange County Public Schools continued its vaccination efforts last week after administering over 4,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in the second round of clinics.
We first told you about OCPS officially announcing its participation in administering COVID-19 vaccines for ages 5 and older here, and its plans to continue after Thanksgiving break here.
Since then, the district has seen 4,308 doses of the vaccine given in the second round of clinics, which started last week at each of its 22 high schools. The 4,308 doses do not include the vaccination event on Saturday, Dec. 4, with numbers still to be determined.
OCPS said each day's turnout exceeded the first round of vaccinations, with booster shots also being offered.
Chief Communications Officer for OCPS Scott Howat said an increase in participation by Central Florida families is welcome news as they all work to guard the community against COVID-19 infection and spread.
"Again this week, we are seeing parents and adult family members getting their vaccines or boosters alongside their children and, in fact, our healthcare partner tells us that the boosters are a large part of the increase in turnout," Howat stated. "OCPS is committed to continuing to provide our school buildings as convenient and trusted locations for vaccine distribution."
According to OCPS, Tuesday, Nov. 30, saw the highest numbers in COVID-19 vaccinations for the week, not including Saturday, Dec. 3, with 1,604 doses. Of the 1,604 doses, 977 were pediatric while 627 were doses for ages 12 and up.
Wednesday, Dec. 1, was close behind, administering 1,456 doses in total, and Thursday, Dec. 2, yielded 1,248 doses in total, OCPS added.
OCPS has announced that additional dates are planned for the start of 2022.
The first vaccination event in 2022 will occur on Tuesday, Jan. 11, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at locations including Ocoee High School, Freedom High School and Evans High School.
