UPDATE:

At 8:02 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, Winter Garden Police Department responded to reports of a man assaulting a woman and discharging a firearm in the City Hall parking lot at 300 W. Plant Street. Upon arrival, officers found Zaralis Mildred Rivera, 32, with visible head injuries, and Javien Angel Ortiz, 22, in the driver's seat of an orange Kia Soul. Approximately 15 shell casings from a 9mm firearm were recovered near the vehicle.

Detective Christian Orlando, who was off-duty at the time, was called to the scene and later interviewed both Rivera and Ortiz. Rivera appeared highly intoxicated and had a strong smell of alcohol; she was transported to Advent Health Winter Garden for treatment. Ortiz refused to speak during his initial interview.

A child was present during the incident. According to the arrest affidavit, the child stated that Ortiz began hitting Rivera, then exited the vehicle and started firing a gun, describing the sounds as "pew pew pew." The child also described the firearm as black with a red or orange light. Information about the child, including their name and relationship to the involved parties, has been redacted from court documents.

Ortiz was arrested and charged with battery, discharging a firearm in public, child abuse without great bodily harm, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
The Kia Soul was sealed and towed for further investigation pending a search warrant. The firearm used in the incident was not immediately recovered.

Ortiz is currently out on $4,000 bond.

The Winter Garden Police Department is investigating reports of gunshots fired Saturday, May 31, in downtown Winter Garden.

According to the WGPD, officers responded to a report of a disturbance between a husband and wife in the City Hall parking lot.

“There was information provided that shots were fired," a police spokesperson said.

No injuries have been reported.

Lakeview Avenue was closed between Smith and Plant streets because of heavy vehicle traffic in the area, authorities said.

No further details have been released; the investigation is ongoing.
